Pau Grande

Pau Grande is a village in the municipality Magé from the 6th district of the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. The district lies at the foot of the Serra dos Órgãos (Organ Pipe Mountains).

History

Where today is the village of Pau Grande, a farm was built around 1848, was one of the four brothers. In the following period the ownership of the land changed frequently. 1877 the land was acquired by the three entrepreneurs Antonio Felicio dos Santos, John Sherrington and Francisco José Pedro Lessa. This built here a textile factory, in Rio de Janeiro and other cities more textile mills were established from which later. Then the location of Pau Grande was founded by the textile workers employed here. After the collapse of the textile industry, Pau Grande turned into a leisure center.

The village belongs to the patronage of St. Anne. ( Square Montesi, paragraph 11). The chapel there is part of the parish of Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Raiz da Serra in the third Deanery of the Diocese of Petrópolis. The end of July will find here the celebrations held in honor of the saints.
