Paul Abadie

Paul Abadie the Younger ( born November 9, 1812 in Paris; † August 3, 1884 in Chatou, Yvelines ) was a French architect and restorer. He is regarded as the main representative of the French historicism. Gained fame Paul Abadie primarily by the design of the Sacre Coeur Basilica in Montmartre in Paris, whose construction he started but could not finish. In addition, he carried out numerous restorations in church buildings in the south of France.

Life

As the son of the architect Abadie was the same in the years 1835 to 1838 students of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under the architect Jules Leclerc and pupil of the painter Jean Alaux. 1840 in the Agence des Archives du Royaume and 1842 permanent employees: the Conseil des bâtiments civils, he was in 1845 Hauptbauinspektor the Hôtel de la chambre of députés ( Chamber of Deputies ), but announced immediately to enter as a second inspector in the agency, under the direction of Jean -Baptiste- Antoine Lassus and Eugène Viollet -le- Duc was responsible for the restoration of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Since 1844, he was commissioned by the Commission for Historical Monuments ( commission des monuments historiques ) deals with the study of buildings in southwestern France. In 1849 he was appointed Auditor of the commission des arts et edifices religieux ( Commission of Sacred Art and church ) and the diocesan architect for Angoulême, Périgueux and Cahors. In 1874, he succeeded by Viollet -le- Duc as diocesan architect for Paris, who had submitted his resignation, in 1881 those of Labbé as diocesan architect for Bordeaux. In these properties it restored in the following years including in Périgueux and Bordeaux religious buildings and other buildings owned by the church.

Paul Abadie died at the age of 71 years in 1884 on a platform in Chatou. He is buried next to his wife Louise, née Mallard († 1860) in the cemetery of Chatou.

One of his students was Edouard Warin (1837-1911), who imitated his style, inter alia, in the restoration of the Church of Villebois -Lavalette.
