Paul Coffey

Paul Coffey ( born June 1, 1961 in Weston, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player (defender), who from 1980 to 2001 for the Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings, Hartford Whalers, Philadelphia Flyers, Chicago Blackhawks, Carolina Hurricanes and Boston Bruins played in the National Hockey League.

Career

Paul Coffey was selected as the sixth in the NHL Entry Draft in 1980 by the Edmonton Oilers. Coffey played the first seven years at the time of his very successful Edmonton Oilers, with whom he was the Stanley Cup three times (1984, 1985 and 1987) to win. 1987 Coffey was traded among other things, Craig Simpson and Chris Joseph to the Pittsburgh Penguins, where he played the next 4 1/2 years, and 1991 was also able to win the Stanley Cup. He then moved to the Los Angeles Kings, where he remained for nearly 2 years. Then he moved, among other things, in exchange for Jimmy Carson to the Detroit Red Wings and played here again 4 1/2 years. After this time, he came for a year at the Hartford Whalers used. He played the next two years with the Philadelphia Flyers. After a half season with the Chicago Blackhawks, he moved to Carolina and remained there for 1 1/2 years. The last half year of his active career he spent with the Boston Bruins.

In 2000, Paul Coffey announced his retirement from professional sport. The highlight of his career was the 1985/86 season in which he was able to achieve 138 points. Paul Coffey won three Norris Trophy as the best defensive player in the league ( 1985, 1986, 1995).

He entered with the most points scorer back as a defender in the playoffs in the history of the NHL and is the scorer rating in the regular season behind Ray Bourque in second place.

As one of the best defensive players of all time - best known for his skating technique and his speed - Paul Coffey was recorded in 2004 in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

With the Canadian national team Coffey won three times - 1984, 1987 and 1991 - the Canada Cup.
