Paul du Ry

Paul du Ry (* 1640 in Paris, † 1714 in Kassel ) was a French -born architect and engineer of the Baroque in Kassel.

Biography

As a Huguenot refugee was Paul du Ry in 1685 by Landgrave Karl Kassel, the residence of Hesse- Kassel, was appointed as an engineer. Previously, Paul du Ry Dutch engineer captain since 1675 and fortress builder in Maastricht (Netherlands). In Hesse -Kassel, he was mainly for the "French construction " belongs to, for the Huguenot colony newly founded. His son Charles du Ry (1692-1757) was, as his grandson Simon Louis du Ry, Oberhof builder in Kassel.

Paul du Ry was a son of the Parisian court architect Mathurin du Ry, whose father Charles du Ry was also active as a court architect in Paris in the first half of the 17th century. This Charles du Ry, Paul du Ry's grandfather, was a student and relative of Salomon de Brosse, the founder of the so-called " Huguenots style" in France.

  • From 1685 the baroque city of Kassel extension Oberneustadt is created the town expansion for the settlement of Huguenot immigrants by Paul du Ry; the predetermined plans for three-axle type houses are modified by him.
