Paul Dukas

Paul Dukas ( born October 1, 1865 in Paris, † May 17, 1935 ) was a French composer, who took inspiration mainly by Cesar Franck and Richard Wagner. His works were conspicuous particularly in rhythm and instrumentation, and belong to the Impressionist movement.

Life

Dukas studied at the Paris Conservatory, piano, harmony and composition. He later taught there himself; his students included Jehan Alain, inter alia, Maurice Duruflé and Olivier Messiaen. In addition, Dukas worked as a music critic since 1892, among other things, he wrote of Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande and Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung, listed in London under the direction of Gustav Mahler. Regarding his own work to Dukas repeatedly spoke out against the charge of imitation of Wagner's style.

Dukas always maintained contacts with other famous composers such as Claude Debussy. Contemporaries describe him as a man of high education. His penchant for self-criticism meant that he broke off a whole series of works composed after its commencement, and finally some quite destroyed because they did not meet his demands. The same trait later showed his pupil Duruflé.

High level of awareness achieved by the setting of the ballad Dukas The Sorcerer's Apprentice by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The orchestral scherzo is often heard in concert halls. Even more popular was the piece by its use in Walt Disney's animated film Fantasia. Nevertheless, the opera Ariane et Barbe -Bleue are from 1907, inspired the tale of Bluebeard, and the ballet La Peri (1911 ) Dukas ' most important works. The opera is written in a contemporary modern sound, which is very subtle and far deeper emotional meaning than one might infer from the title. Dukas has also made works of old masters accessible through development of appropriate expenditure - an example is his Rameau edits. From his estate appeared collected reviews, Les Écrits sur la musique.

February 15, 1965 was published in honor of his 100th birthday a 0.40 0.10 Franc special postage stamp with a portrait of Dukas ' after a design by René Cottet.
