Paul Fredericq

Paul Fredericq ( born August 12, 1850 in Ghent, † March 23, 1920 ) was a Belgian historian.

Fredericq converted to Protestantism in his youth, attended the Royal Athenaeum in Ghent and studied at the University of Liège with the Magisterium exam in 1871. Thereafter, he was a teacher in Mechelen and Arlon. In 1875 he was in Liege in history doctorate ( Essai sur le rôle politique et social des Dukes of Bourgogne dans les Pays -Bas ) and was a professor there. In 1883 he was the successor of Jacob Heremans as a professor in Ghent. During the German occupation in World War I he was against collaboration and therefore was together with his colleague Henri Pirenne in 1916 deported to Germany, where he was in Gütersloh, Jena and Biirgel. In 1919 he became Rector of the University of Ghent, which he soon gave up on it because antiflämischer campaigns.

He was active as a Liberal in the Flemish movement. 1891 to 1895 he worked for the Liberals in the City Council. He was president of Willemsfonds in Ghent and editor of Het Volk concern. In addition, in 1894 he founded the folk high school movement Hooger Onderwijs voor het people. He advocated for the teaching of the Flemish of Belgian schools.

He focused in particular on the history of religion in Belgium in the 16th century ( for example, the Inquisition), and history of Flemish literature. He also wrote a history of the Flemish movement.

He was a member of the Royal Belgian Academy of Sciences and the Royal Belgian Historical Commission.
