Paul Garrin

Paul Garrin ( * 1957 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ) is an American video, and multimedia artists.

Life and work

Garrin 1977 studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and from 1978 until his Bachelor's degree in 1982 at the Cooper Union School of Arts in New York City with Vito Acconci and Hans Haacke. Since 1973 he was a member of Nam June Paik and produced for him, as well as for Shigeko Kubota, video works. In 1981 he became assistant to Paik, where he was primarily responsible for electrical engineering.

Since 1985 he has focused on video films in which he dealt with the social conditions in the United States. He used to represent the " American Nightmare " original recordings of race riots and street riots, police dogs ( " Art That Barks - nature did Bites " ) and serial killers. In 1988 he filmed with a camcorder the street violence and police brutality on the Tompkins Square in New York and continued the recordings to the video film " Man with a Video Camera ." He was aired in the news broadcasts of the television stations in the U.S. and made ​​the artist known nationally. Garrin 1992 showed the computerized, interactive video installation " White Devil " on the "Media " in Hamburg.
