Paul Gavarni

Paul Gavarni ( Hippolyte Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier ) ( born January 13, 1804 in Paris, † November 23, 1866 in Auteuil ) was a French draftsman, printmaker and caricaturist.

Gavarni began as a fashion illustrator. From 1828 he created witty and ironic depictions of Parisian society and 1848-1851 moralistic during a London stay representations of the local slums. Gavarni was one of the masters of 19th Century Lithograph. There are also important his book illustrations and watercolors.

Among other things, he worked for the satirical magazine Le Charivari.
