Paul Graetz

Paul Graetz ( born July 2, 1890 in Glogau (according to IMDb August 4, 1889 in Berlin), † February 16, 1937 in Hollywood) was in the 1920s as a major comedian in theater and cabaret scene in Berlin. He was also a film actor.

Life

Paul Graetz was born in 1890 as the son of a Jewish merchant family. Graetz began his acting career in 1911 at the New Theatre in Frankfurt am Main. In 1916 he joined the Deutsches Theater in Berlin, where he made his debut under the director Max Reinhardt in The Merchant of Venice. 1919 Graetz was involved in the revival of Cabaret smoke and mirrors, he brought pieces of Kurt Tucholsky and Walter Mehring on the stage there. 1925 retired from Graetz from the ensemble of the Deutsches Theater and worked as a freelance film and stage actor. In 1928, he appeared on the comedian and cabaret in old Bavaria. On January 18, 1930 Storm over Berlin came to the performance, were among the artists involved besides Graetz and Ernst Busch, Pink Valetti and Karl Valentin. 1931 Graetz joined again into a performance of Max Reinhardt, a production of The Tales of Hoffmann at the Grosses Schauspielhaus. In the film, he played mostly comic and grotesque characters. In January 1933, shortly before the " seizure of power", Graetz picked up in a recording studio eyes of the big city by Kurt Tucholsky.

Paul Graetz fled on February 28, 1933, the Nazis to England. His Jewish background and the critique of National Socialism, which he brought in his plays to express threatened to be him under the new regime 's undoing. In London, he learned English intensively, initially in small film roles. In 1934 he played on the side of yet unknown Errol Flynn in Murder at Monte Carlo. Also in the British film Jew Süss he had a role. Also in England was written in 1935 Mr. Cohen Takes a Walk with Paul Graetz in the title role, the only film with him in the lead role. End of December 1935 he traveled to New York and later to Hollywood. There he received roles in several B- movies. In February 1937, shortly before the start of filming of the movie Maria Walewska, Graetz died at the age of only 46 years.
