Paul Hainzel

Paul Hainzel (* 1527, † 1581) was a German astronomer and Mayor of Augsburg.

His brother was Johann / it Baptista Hainzel. 1545-1549 were both studying in Italy.

He was a friend of Tycho Brahe. Beginning in 1570 designed Brahe on Hainzels Gögginger Gartengut (partly the former Graf von Seysselsche Park ) was then the largest astronomical observation device throughout Europe, the Augsburg quadrant which was destroyed already in December 1574 by a storm. With the quadrant Heinzel 1572 could determine the latitude of its location at 48 degrees and 22 minutes of arc, about two kilometers away from the actual value.

After Hainzel the lunar crater was named Hainzel.
