Paul Hermann

Paul Hermann (* June 30, 1646 in Halle ( Saale), † January 29, 1695 in Leiden ) was a German physician and plant collector. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Herm. ".

Life

His father was an organist in the St. Ulrich Church and his mother was the daughter of the pastor of the church. Originally, he should study theology, but he was interested in already as a young child for the plant world. Yet in Wittenberg he began to study theology, but what it gives up and goes to study medicine. He studied for nine years in Leipzig, Jena, Leiden, Rome and Padua. In the local botanical garden, he meets a variety of exotic plants. In 1670 he obtained at the University of Padua, a doctorate in medicine and philosophy. In 1671 he continued his studies at Leiden University. The Director of the Botanical Garden, Arnold Sijen, recommends Paul Hermann as a doctor of the United East India Company.

In 1672 he sailed for the United East India Company to Ceylon ( now Sri Lanka) and should heal the employees of dysentery, malaria, smallpox and smallpox there. However, he collected plants there for friendly botanists in Europe - so for Johannes Burman (1707-1779), the Dutch professor of botany, who corresponded with Linnaeus. During his absence of suffering he was represented there by Peter Hotton. 1677 Hermann returned back; they rewarded him on 21 November 1678 an appointment as professor of botany at the University of Leiden, where he led the last 15 years of his life the famous Carolus Clusius founded by Hortus Academicus. In 1680 he again took a trip to Ceylon. On April 10, 1686, he also was appointed professor of practical medicine in Leiden and worked 1691/92 as rector of the university. 1717 his herbarium was released as Musaeum Zeylanicum, Linnaeus referred to in his Flora zeylanica 1747 Hermann finds.

Ehrentaxon

Joseph Pitton de Tournefort named in his honor the genus Hermannia the plant family (Malvaceae ). Linnaeus later took the name.
