Paul Hoyningen-Huene

Paul Hoyningen -Huene ( born July 31, 1946 in Pfronten ) is a German philosopher who is concerned in particular with issues of theoretical philosophy of science in connection to Thomas S. Kuhn and Paul Feyerabend, and with scientific ethics. He holds the Chair of Theoretical Philosophy, especially Philosophy of Science, at the University of Hannover and Director of the Center for Philosophy and Ethics of Science.

Life

Hoyningen -Huene studied physics and philosophy at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University Munich, Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, and the University of Zurich. His degree in theoretical physics he earned in 1971 at the University of Munich. The doctorate in theoretical physics in 1975 at the University of Zurich, while at the Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of Zurich ( 1972-1976 Armin Thellung ) was an assistant. He worked from 1975-1980 as an assistant at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Zurich with Hermann Luebbe. In the period 1976-1995 he held various positions as a lecturer in philosophy at the University of Zurich true within the subjects philosophy, sociology, biology, history, environment and psychology. From 1980 to 1998 was followed by teaching assignments for Philosophy of Science at the University of Bern. He was also from 1980 to 1982 Freelancer in television DRS for the series " People, science and technology ". From 1984 to 1985 he was a visiting scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy at Thomas Kuhn. From 1987 to 1988, Hoyningen -Huene Senior Visiting Fellow at the Center for Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1988, a PhD degree in philosophy of science with a thesis on the philosophy of science Kuhn at the ETH Zurich. In 1997 Hoyningen -Huene responded to a call on a C4 professorship as a founding director of the Central Institute for Philosophy and Ethics of Science ( ZEWW ) at the University of Hannover. In addition, he held visiting professorships and Representations in Switzerland and Norway ( 1999) ( 1980, 1987, 2010 and 2012), Yugoslavia ( 1989, 1990), Denmark (2000 1995). In 2001 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina.

In April 2010, the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Hannover was re-established under the direction of Hoyningen -Huene and ZEWW integrated as a subunit of the Center for Philosophy and Ethics of Science in the Institute. The Institute's research is primarily focused on topics of theoretical and practical philosophy of science.

Hoyningen -Huene has established relationships in the Far East. In March 2009, he lectured at the National Taiwan University and Soochow University in Taipei. He organized together with Sumei CHENG (Shanghai Academy of Social Science), the annual "Sino - German Symposium in the Philosophy of Science and Technology" (2011 at the Leibniz University of Hannover, 2012 at the Shanghai Academy of Social Science, 2013, the Shanghai University, in 2014 planned in Bielefeld ). By Jen- Jeuq Yuann ( National Taiwan University) he organized in 2012 at the National Taiwan University in Taipei, the conference " incommensurability 50 ".

In September 2013 Hoyningen -Huene was in the Scientific Commission " Ethics of Science " Leopoldina - elected National Academy of Sciences.

Work focuses on

The central focal point of Hoyningen -Huene is the general philosophy of science. He is particularly concerned with Thomas S. Kuhn and Paul Feyerabend's philosophy of science and incommensurability with the topic. With the book " The philosophy of science Thomas S. Kuhn. Reconstruction and basic problems, " he has presented an influential neo-Kantian interpretation of Kuhn, turns against irrational interpretations of Kuhn's philosophy of science. In addition, Hoyningen -Huene worked on the problems of reductionism, especially in biology, emergence, and to a theory antireduktionistischer arguments. He has dealt with a number of other topics, such as the mathematization of science, the philosophy of geography, the philosophy of the historical sciences, the technological use of the natural sciences, the social cognition of primates, philosophy Niels Bohr, the philosophy of psychology, with Kant's Prolegomena, the philosophical question of trust and the philosophy of football. His book " Systematicity: The Nature of Science " is devoted to the question of the nature of science (including the social sciences and humanities ) and develops the thesis that the characteristic feature of science that distinguishes it from other forms of knowledge, their higher degree is of systematicity.
