Publications

A wider public Cordes was particularly known for his research on the role of fathers in modern society: The Lost fathers - an emergency call. Freiburg ( Herder) 2002.

Cordes analyzes family structure, marriage law and father role and is considering psychological studies conclude that the " corrections " of male identity have devastating effects on the mental health of men, children and the partner relationships.

Particularly controversial is Cordes ' representation of the possible relationship between father role, violence by fathers, right-wing of adolescents, eating disorders and clinical depression in girls: " woman -centered families ' resolve ... violent shaped, demonstrative masculinity among young people from " (p. 31),

Cordes therefore calls for a return to a religiously based understanding of the roles of men and fathers.

The role of the man is determined by the separation of the wife or mother. " The boy must learn not to become a woman " (p. 32).

The role of the father is the child's relationship to the mother to " segregate " (p. 25): "It is finally only the father the intervention, by a mother to her child is to you. Otherwise it forms with the child one indissoluble cocoon, preventing it to be independent and to approach the reality. "(P. 25 ) Following Erik Erikson Cordes emphasizes the irreplaceability of the Father for the construction of an identity and the emergence of self-esteem of the child: " for there are something that only a father can: only he can balance the threatening territory the end of his appearance through the guardianship of his conducting, directing voice. '" (p. 50, quoting from Eiksons Luther study, p.134 )

However, the main part of the presentation deals with the religious foundation of the father role. In distinction between Islam and Judaism Cordes works out the father image of the Trinitarian concept of God and shows that behind the father's role in the family, the Christian understanding of God should be to provide orientation and at the same time to open the horizon to the transcendental meaning of human life back. This is father love ( in its two meanings ) always at the same time "God's love".

Brisant is its distinction from Islam, if indirectly ( in a reference to John Henry Newman), theologians excommunication is assigned, if they identify the Islamic God with the Christian and recognize Islam as a revelation (probably an allusion to Hans Küng ) ( pp. 170f, note 82, p 140).

For publication helpers do not fall from the sky. Caritas and spirituality that was in Berlin presented to the public by Jürgen Rüttgers and Franz Müntefering 2008, Pope Benedict XVI writes. in the preface: "I am delighted that Cardinal Cordes with great energy picks up the momentum and unfolds, I have tried to initiate with my Encyclical Deus Caritas Est. As a part of his toil, I welcome his book helper does not fall from the sky. Caritas and spirituality, is shown in the many sides of what 's included in the base word Caritas (Love). So I wish the book a careful listening that penetrates into the hearts and leads them through listening and reading out of the work of love as for deeper communion with Jesus Christ. "

Defeat the evil with the good. Boundaries of psychology and the power of faith, Augsburg ( Sankt Ulrich Verlag) 2009 In a review of the FAZ of 11 April 2009 states: . " Not too long ago, you would have considered such a book as apolitical and highly out of date. [ ... ] Perhaps it took the Shock in Western societies by a global financial and economic crisis, to understand the first sentence of the book by Cardinal Cordes properly. , Well, no one will deny that we are fascinated by evil ' or a further: ' the cruel villainy of contemporaries can always awaken new shock-like ' Why, the evil ', why that infamy ', could have been recently gefregt innocent and with nimble explanations the person concerned as well (supposedly) disposed of as non-performing loans. .
