Paul Josef Cordes
Paul Josef Cardinal Cordes ( born September 5, 1934 in Kirchhundem, Kreis Olpe ) is a retired German Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.
Life
Cordes studied after graduating from high school in 1955 at Rivius Gymnasium Attendorn first medicine at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster. There he joined KDSt.V. as a member of the Catholic Student Association Sauerlandia Muenster in the CV. After a few semesters, he moved to the Faculty of Theology in Paderborn. He was also a member of K.D.St.V. Guestfalo - Silesia Paderborn. On December 21, 1961 Cordes received in Paderborn by Archbishop Lawrence Jaeger, the sacrament of Holy Orders. After various tasks in the church service, he took his theological studies again and was founded in 1971 with Karl Lehmann in Mainz with the work " program on the service - exegetical, historical and systematic studies on the conciliar decree, from the Ministry and Life of Priests " at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz doctorate. Pope John Paul II appointed Paul Josef Cordes on March 11, 1980 Vice- President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity. Awards
In 2000, the Fu Jen Catholic University in Taipei Cordes recorded with an honorary doctorate. On 1 February 2006 him the Great Cross of Merit was presented with Star of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Vatican by the German ambassador to the Holy See. Federal President Horst Köhler has honored Cordes ' outstanding commitment and interest in international humanitarian operations and to international understanding and inter-religious cooperation. On 7 November 2008 he received an honorary doctorate from Seton Hall University in Newark, United States. With an honorary doctorate awarded him on 23 January 2009 from the Pontifical and Royal University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Manila, Philippines.
Publications
A wider public Cordes was particularly known for his research on the role of fathers in modern society: The Lost fathers - an emergency call. Freiburg ( Herder) 2002.
Cordes analyzes family structure, marriage law and father role and is considering psychological studies conclude that the " corrections " of male identity have devastating effects on the mental health of men, children and the partner relationships.
Particularly controversial is Cordes ' representation of the possible relationship between father role, violence by fathers, right-wing of adolescents, eating disorders and clinical depression in girls: " woman -centered families ' resolve ... violent shaped, demonstrative masculinity among young people from " (p. 31),
Cordes therefore calls for a return to a religiously based understanding of the roles of men and fathers.

In distinction between Islam and Judaism Cordes works out the father image of the Trinitarian concept of God and shows that behind the father's role in the family, the Christian understanding of God should be to provide orientation and at the same time to open the horizon to the transcendental meaning of human life back. This is father love ( in its two meanings ) always at the same time "God's love".
