Paul Laverty

Paul Laverty ( born 1957 in Calcutta, India) is a screenwriter. His father is of Scottish origin, his mother an Irishwoman.

Life and work

Prior to his career as a screenwriter, he studied philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Subsequently, he studied at Strathclyde Law School in Glasgow, Scotland where he made a degree as a lawyer. Professionally, he then worked as a lawyer. In the 1990s, he met the director Ken Loach and Laverty 1996 was first screenplay for the film Carla 's Song. From now on, wrote Paul Laverty almost invariably the screenplays for the films of Ken Loach.

1998 Laverty was honored at the British Independent Film Awards for Best Screenplay. Even on his debut he could get a nomination for the BAFTA Award. In 2004 he received a nomination for the European Film Award for his screenplay for Fond Kiss ..., Ae. In 2002, he was honored at the Cannes Film Festival for Best Screenplay.
