Paul Lukas

Paul Lukas ( born May 26, 1894 in Budapest, † August 15, 1971 in Tangier, Morocco; actually Pál Lukács ) was a Hungarian- American actor. He won the 1944 Oscar for best actor.

Career

The Hungarian Luke, who actually Pál Lukács was called, began his acting career in 1916 in the Austria -Hungarian Kassa as a theater actor and rose rapidly to become a popular performer on various stages. At the height of his European career, he was often seen in productions by Max Reinhardt.

In 1927 he was invited by Adolph Zukor in the USA and signed initially a contract at Paramount, where he was employed on the side of some of the biggest female stars of the studio, so Pola Negri (Three Sinners, The Woman from Moscow ), Ruth Chatterton ( The Right to Love, Unfaithful, Anybody's Woman, Tomorrow and Tomorrow ) and Kay Francis ( I Found Stella Parrish ).

He celebrated his biggest success in 1943 as a partner of Bette Davis in Watch on the Rhine, for which he received an Academy Award and the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Actor. Luke had played the role in the eponymous play by Lillian Hellman already on Broadway.
