Paul Marciano

Paul Marciano ( * ca 1952 in Debdou, Morocco) is an American businessman who with his brother Maurice, the fashion brand Guess? possesses.

Life

Marciano comes from a Sephardic family whose ancestors resided in Morocco since the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in the 16th century. Already his great-grandfather, grandfather and father were well-known rabbi in the Jewish community of Debdou. After the establishment of Israel, most Jews of Morocco migrated in the 1950s from there. The Marciano went to France, where Paul grew up in Marseille.

Marciano was sent at the age of nine years at a training center for rabbis to Strasbourg in Alsace according to the tradition, but he left after two weeks. At 16, he went because of problems at school in a kibbutz in Israel. From there he was brought back by the family to southern France and began to work in the small clothing factory of one of his brothers. The company MGA entertained some stores on the Riviera.

Following a visit to California in 1977, the brothers Marciano decided to go to there in 1981. They founded the company Guess? Inc., which produced one of the first stonewashed jeans.
