Paul Morgan (actor)

Paul Morgan ( born October 1, 1886 in Vienna, † December 10, 1938 in the Buchenwald concentration camp; native Paul Morgenstern ) was an actor, comedian and librettist.

Life

Paul Morgan, whose real name is Paul George Morgenstern, was the eldest son of the lawyer Gustav Morgenstern and the Clementine Morgenstern. He took acting classes and attended the kk Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and debuted in August 1908 at the Theater in der Josefstadt. He played at the Jaro - stages and various provincial theaters in Austria -Hungary and Germany. In 1910 he worked as an extra the first time in a movie.

In 1917 he was engaged at the Berlin Lessing Theater. In the 1920s, he made a name for himself as a master of ceremonies in the theater of Rudolf Nelson revues as well as in the Herman Haller and Erik Charell. In addition, he performed at Cabaret megalomania and the cabaret on the rocket. Along with Kurt Robitschek and Max Hansen he founded in late 1924, the cabaret comedian in Berlin, in the great comedian and cabaret artists such as Werner Finck, William Bendow and Heinz Erhardt occurred. With Max Hansen and Wilhelm Bendow he took in the late 1920s on several records.

Between 1919 and 1933 Paul Morgan played with in over 50 films. In the fall of 1930 he lived in Hollywood, where he worked in the German versions of American films. After the seizure of power by the Nazis in May 1933, he emigrated via Switzerland to Austria. His film career was virtually ended, he came to Vienna and Czechoslovakia only to some dramatic performances. To 1935/36, he wrote the libretto for Ralph Benatzky musical comedy Axel at heaven's door.

On March 22, 1938, a few days after the Anschluss, Morgan was arrested, allegedly deported to the Dachau concentration camp because of a letter from Gustav Stresemann, and was in May 1938, from where he was transferred in September to the concentration camp Buchenwald. He died there in December 1938. Official cause of death as pneumonia was specified.
