Paul of Narbonne

Paul was the first bishop of Narbonne. His patronage is March 22. He was one of seven bishops consecrated men who were sent by Gregory of Tours ( 538-594 ) at the time of the Emperor Decius, so in the years 249-251 to the mission to Gaul, where he located on a 5th from the century Passio of Saturninus of Toulouse relates. The other missionaries were: Gatianus of Tours, Trophimus of Arles Saturninus of Toulouse, Denis of Paris, Stremonius of Auvergne and Martial of Limoges, which are each the first bishops of their diocese. To Paul Gregory reported that he could carry out his mission and died in peace.

In the Middle Ages, Paul, was to strengthen the connection to the local tradition to the apostles, equated with the Roman proconsul Sergius Paulus, who was converted by the Apostle Paul (Acts 13:6-13 ). Even today, Bishop Paul is revered in Narbonne as Saint Paul- Serge, his basilica in the town takes its name.
