Paul Philippoteaux

Paul Dominique Philippoteaux ( born January 27, 1846 in Paris, † 1923 ) was a French painter.

Life

Philippoteaux was a son of the painter Félix Philippoteaux and received by this also its first art lessons. He graduated from the Lycée Henri IV with success and then moved on to the École des Beaux -Arts. There he was instructed by Léon Cogniet and Alexandre Cabanel. Him to participate in the major annual exhibitions of the Paris Salon was also supported by his teachers soon possible.

Reception

In addition to his portraits and other oil paintings Philippoteaux was primarily known for his monumental panoramic pictures. Many of these were developed in collaboration with his father.

The Cyclorama of the Battle of Gettysburg is about 990 square meters and is considered his most famous work. In 1879 he took on the task of creating this work. After initial research, he traveled in April 1882 in the U.S. and photographed the entire battlefield and interviewed survivors, as Abner Doubleday, Winfield Scott Hancock and Oliver Otis Howard. In preparing Philippoteaux supported alongside his father four more assistants.
