Paul Raud

Paul Raud (. * 11 Oktoberjul / October 23 1865greg in the village Kirikuküla, then the parish of St. Jakobi, . † November 22, 1930 in Tallinn) was an Estonian painter. Together with his twin brother Kristjan and Ants Laikmaa he is considered one of the most influential artists of his country at the beginning of the 20th century.

Raud lost his father early. Help of his uncle Magnus came Rauds family in 1881 to Dorpat, where he attended secondary school. In the house of Philosophy Professor Gustav Teichmüller Raud saw works by the painter Oskar Hoffmann and Julius von Klever. After finishing high school Raud first heard art history lectures pond miller and completed a year of military service, before he decided to go to art education in Germany. There he studied 1888-1894 at the Art Academy Dusseldorf Heinrich Lauenstein, Hugo Crola, Peter Janssen, Adolf Schill and Eduard von Gebhardt painting. For this he received - mediated by Teichmüller - a scholarship of the widowed Baroness Natalie von Uexküll in the amount of 40 rubles a month. After his return to Estonia, he devoted himself mainly to the portrait and landscape painting. From 1911 on, he worked as a drawing teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts of Saint Petersburg. In 1914, he joined as an art teacher at the trade school for girls in Tallinn.
