Paul Reeves

Sir Paul Alfred Reeves ONZ QSO KCMG GCVO ( born December 6, 1932 in Wellington, New Zealand, † August 14, 2011 in Auckland ) was a New Zealand minister of the Anglican Church and Primate and Archbishop of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia, the 1985 was the first minister and the first New Zealander descent from the Māori Governor-General of New Zealand.

Life

Ascent to the Primate and Archbishop

After schooling Reeves attended a seminary in 1958 and received his first ordination as a deacon before he was ordained a priest of the Anglican Church in 1960. He then worked for ten years as a priest and was during his 1964-1966 activities exercised as vicar of the parish of St. Paul in Okato in the Taranaki region out that he was descended through his maternal grandmother of the Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand. In the period following him its origin and the complaints of the Māori became aware. He began to identify with the Māori and their origins and developed some notoriety as a commentator social affairs.

In 1971, his consecration as bishop. He was bishop of the Diocese of Waiapu, before he was appointed in 1979 as bishop of the Diocese of Auckland. During this time he was 1974-1976 and Chairman of the Environment Council in 1975 and supporters of Citizens for Rowling, a citizens' movement in support of Prime Minister Bill Rowling.

1980 Reeves was elected as the successor to Allen Howard Johnston, Bishop of Waikato, by the General Synod of the Primate of the Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia and Archbishop of New Zealand. This office he held until 1985 and then by the Bishop of Wellington, Brian Newton Davis, detached.

Governor-General of New Zealand

On the proposal of Prime Minister David Lange, he was appointed as the first minister and the first New Zealander who descended from the Māori on 22 November 1985 for the Governor-General of New Zealand and hence successor of David Beattie. Shortly thereafter, he was beaten in the context of the birthday of Queen Elizabeth II Knight Bachelor and led henceforth the additional name "Sir". In addition, it was not just in 1985, the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George, 1986, but the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order awarded. In addition, he was honored for his achievements in 1990 with the Queen's Service Order.

After completing his term as Governor-General on 19 November 1990 and the replacement by Catherine Tizard he was three years observers of the Anglican Church at the United Nations. He also worked for numerous other organizations and institutions between 1995 and 1997 and was also Chairman of the Commission on the revision of the Constitution of Fiji.

In 2005 he was elected Chancellor of the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) and held that office until his death. For his services he was in 2007 awarded the Order of New Zealand, the highest honor in New Zealand.
