Paul Scofield

David Paul Scofield, CH, CBE ( born January 21, 1922 in Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex today, † March 19, 2008 in Sussex ) was a British actor. He won the 1967 Oscar for best actor.

Life

Scofield was one of the great mime artists of the British theater. Then he starred in a few films, he is less well known than his older colleague Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud. He is, however, a notable figure in the British theater history; this mainly through his interpretations of Shakespeare. He played his most famous role in 1966 in Robert Bolt's play A Man for All Seasons. For his performance as Sir Thomas More in the Broadway production, he received a Tony Award, and for the same role in the film of the same Fred Zinnemann an Oscar.

Despite the great success but still the stage remained his main field of activity. 2004 elected the members of the Royal Shakespeare Company, the best Shakespearean interpretation of all time. In the male actors Paul Scofield took first place for his role as King Lear from the year 1962. ( In the female actors Judi Dench came for her Lady Macbeth from 1976 in the first place. )

With the modesty of the stated family man who spent most of his private life just a few kilometers from his birthplace, he refused to be charged by the Queen to the peerage. He left in 2001 to record, however, after repeated urging of friends and colleagues in the exclusive Order " Companie of Honour". He died in March 2008 from leukemia, in which he was ill for several years. Scofield was married to British actress Joy Parker in 1943, leaving behind a son and a daughter.
