Paul Sylbert

Paul Sylbert ( born April 16, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York City, New York) is an American art director and production designer, who has won both an Academy Award for Best Production Design and the ADG Lifetime Achievement Award.

Life

Sylbert, twin brother of also acting as Production Designer two -time Oscar and ADG Lifetime Achievement Award - winner Richard Sylbert, studied post-school at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University. began his career as an art director and production designer in 1951 in the TV movie premiere and worked until 2008 in the production of some fifty films. His work in the film was interrupted by military service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In 1964, he was responsible as a director and worked for the shooting of several episodes of television series such as Mr. Broadway, The Defenders, The Nurses and The Broadway.

At the Academy Awards in 1979 he won together with Edwin O'Donovan and George Gaines Academy Award for Best Production Design in the fantasy comedy film The Heaven Can Wait (1978 ) by Warren Beatty and Buck Henry Warren Beatty, Julie Christie and James Mason in the lead roles.

In 1992 he along with Caryl Heller an Oscar nomination for Best Production Design in The Prince of Tides (1991 ) directed by and starring Barbra Streisand and Nick Nolte and Blythe Danner.

2009 he was awarded by the Art Directors Guild of ADG Lifetime Achievement Award, which his brother had already received in 2000.

Slybert also worked as a screenwriter and wrote the screenplays for the films The Steagle (1971 ) - whose director he was also - and Nighthawks (1981).
