Paul Thureau-Dangin

Paul Marie Pierre Thureau - Dangin ( born December 14, 1837 in Paris, † February 24, 1913 ) was a French historian and Secrétaire perpétuel the Académie française.

Life

As a trained lawyer Thureau - Dangin worked for the French Conseil d' État, but he was known primarily for its historical research. His most important work is the three-volume Histoire de la Renaissance catholique en Angleterre au XIXe Siècle ( history of the Catholic Renaissance in England in the 19th century, 1899-1906 ). He was also the author of Histoire de la monarchy de Juillet ( History of the July Monarchy, 1884) and many other books on history and religion of France.

Politically Thureau - Dangin liberal Catholic of the second generation after the French Revolution, whose life was marked by the end of the Second Empire and the beginning of the Third French Republic. The faithful historian was convinced of the idea of a Catholic church that fit the modern age and the Republic, and showed great interest in a renewal of Catholicism in the United Kingdom.

He was elected in 1893 to the Académie française and was its Secrétaire perpétuel.

Family

His son Jean was a deputy and senator of the Third Republic. His son François was an eminent orientalist. His daughter Marie married the writer Paul Renaudin.

Honors

Thureau - Dangin was a member of the Legion of Honor with the rank of Chevalier.
