Paul Tschackert

Paul Moritz Robert Tschackert ( born January 10, 1848 in Frey city (Silesia ), † July 7, 1911 in Göttingen ) was a German Protestant church historian.

Life

The son of a Catholic citizen who converted to Protestantism later, and a Protestant mother was baptized a Protestant. Since his father died early, Tschackert was instructed during the visit of the high school in Sagan on foreign assistance. The teachers of the school were mainly from the Catholic faith, except the Protestant religion teacher. He was familiar with the early events in the Roman Church. Aged 20, he moved into 1868, the University of Breslau in order to complete a degree in theology. Here he met Hermann Reuter, who significantly influenced his theological studies and made ​​sure that Tschackert in the fall of 1869 attended the Silesian Seminary in Halle ( Saale).

During his two- year stay in Halle, he studied with great diligence at Martin Kähler (1835-1912) Protestant theology and was in the eighth semester exams with the theological Very good. In 1877 he became an associate professor at the University of Halle -Wittenberg and took over in 1879 as the successor Kählers inspection at the Silesian seminary.

On April 1, 1884, he was appointed full professor of church history at the University of Königsberg, where he gained access to valuable archive of college and grappled intensively with the documentary resources of the university, especially in the field of Reformation history. In 1890 he was finally appointed Professor of Church History at the University of Göttingen. In Göttingen, he worked mainly in the area of the Lower Saxon church history, was co-founder in 1896 of the Society for Lower Saxony church history and one of the first major editor of the Yearbook of the Society for Lower Saxony church history. Tschackert has written numerous articles in the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie and in the second and third edition of the Encyclopaedia of Protestant theology and church.
