Paul Van Nevel

Paul Van Nevel ( born February 4, 1946 in Hasselt ) is a Belgian conductor, musicologist and art historian. His work focuses on the polyphonic choral music of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

In a music-loving family grew up, he began singing as a teenager daily for up to four hours. In addition, the father encouraged him to all the musical instruments that were in the household, to learn. Paul Van Nevel began his musical studies at the Maastricht Conservatory before he studied from 1969 to 1971 at the Schola Cantorum in Basel. There he founded in 1970 the Huelgas Ensemble.

The ensemble's name refers to the Cistercian monastery of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas in the west of Burgos, in which the young musicologist than 24 -year-old was traveling with a letter of recommendation from the Belgian authorities. During his two- week stay in this convent he had the opportunity to study the archived here centuries-old scores.

In the following years he devoted himself intensively to the Flemish polyphonic music of the 15th and 16th centuries. His work has also experienced numerous composers from this period, such as Johannes Ciconia, Nicolas Gombert, Cipriano de Rore, Josquin Desprez, Jacobus de Kerle, Orlando di Lasso, Clemens non Papa, and others, a renaissance.

For his services he was awarded the 1994 Prix of the Académie Charles Cros in Honorem. His recordings with the Huelgas Ensemble also received numerous awards including the Diapason d' Or ( 1996), the Echo Klassik Prize (1997 and 2010), the Cannes Classical Award (1998) and the Choc de l' année (2000 and 2003 ).

Van Nevel has held a visiting professorship at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam.

Since 2007, he is married to the Hanoverian musician and music university lecturer Silke Jacobsen. He lives in Hanover and Leuven / Belgium. His nephew Erik Van Nevel is a musician.
