Paul Viiding

Paul Viiding ( May 22nd, 1904 in Walk, Livonia, † 27 June 1962, Tallinn, Estonia ) was an Estonian writer, literary critic and translator.

Life and work

Paul Viiding closed in 1930 a degree in mathematics at the University of Tartu. He initially worked with the insurance company grandma before he became a freelance writer in Tartu. In the late 1930s he was employed by the Estonian Radio in Tallinn.

After the Soviet occupation of Estonia Viiding was secretary of the Writers' Union of the Estonian SSR. However, he fell at the new rulers soon out of favor and had to work as a bookseller. From 1953, however, he could be working as a writer again and was admitted to the Union of Writers in 1956 again.

Viidings literary career began in the 1930s. In 1938 he was one of the founders of the literary movement Arbujad. He has published numerous short stories, poems and a novel. In addition Viiding was known as a translator from Russian ( Gogol, Radishchev, Gorki ) and from the German ( Schiller).

Private life

Paul Viiding was married to Linda Viiding. The couple had three daughters and son Juhan Viiding, the writer was himself. Paul Viiding is the grandfather of the Estonian poet Elo Viiding.
