Paulin Soumanou Vieyra

Paulin Vieyra Soumanou (* 1925 in Porto Novo, Dahomey, now Benin, † November 4, 1987 in Paris) was an African filmmaker and film historian. He is considered a pioneer of African cinema.

Biography

In 1952 he was accepted at the Paris film school. Among his teachers were Georges Sadoul, Jean Mitry and Rémy Tesseneau. His graduation film C'etait il y quatre ans was the victim of censorship. As the first African film is considered Afrique- sur -Seine, a short film, which turned Vieyra 1955 with other students. It was still banned Africans, to rotate in the former French colonies. For this reason, the first shot by Africans film in Paris was born. The theme of the Africans in the Diaspora should remain an important theme of African cinema. After his studies, Vieyra decided to go to Senegal. Vieyra and his friends from the group africain du Cinéma turned mol ( Les Pêcheurs ), the story of an ambitious young fisherman. Georges Pompidou came to Senegal, Leopold Sedar Senghor to pay a visit, and Vieyra turned the ironic film Écrits de Dakar.

Appeared in 1975 Vieyra's book Le cinéma africain. Des origines à 1973, the first history of African cinema at all. Vieyra will be used again and again for an African critique of African cinema, especially as the European critics often the conditions or simply missing only the interest to describe African cinema adequately. Of course, he was also there, as in 1969, the Association of African filmmakers, the Fédération Panafricaine of Filmmakers ( FEPACI ) was founded.

1982 doctorate Vieyra at the Sorbonne with the work À la recherche du cinéma africain ( Supervisor: Jean Rouch ).

Vieyra frequently participated in the production of the films of his friend Ousmane Sembene, on which he also wrote the first monograph.
