Paulinus the Deacon

Paulinus of Milan was a deacon and secretary and biographer of Bishop Ambrose of Milan.

Life

Paulinus was a deacon and secretary of Ambrose before he served as administrator of church property in North Africa. There he wrote the contemporary account of the life of Ambrose probably in the year 422 at the request of Augustine of Hippo.

Against the Pelagians

In 411 Paulinus opposed the theologians Caelestius, a representative of Pelagianism. He set up six theses, which proved the pelgianischen views as heresy. Caelestius gave up trying to be a presbyter in Carthage, and went to Ephesus. 417 Paulinus was called to Rome to justify himself.
