Paulista, officially Municipio de Paulista is a city in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco.

It is located at a latitude of 07 º 57'00 "South and 34 º 52'59 " west longitude at an altitude of 13 meters above sea level and had 300 466 inhabitants in 2010. The population was on 1 July 2013 by the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística ( IBGE ) estimated at 316 714 inhabitants, who are called Pauli Tenser.

Geography

The area is 97 km ². Paulista is located on the coast of the Atlantic, where it has 14 km beach. In the neighborhood are the villages of Abreu e Lima, Janga, Pau Amarelo, Conceição and Maria Farinha. Recife, the capital of Pernambuco, located about 12 km south. The patron saint paulistas is Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres ( Our Lady of the pleasure).

History

The area, which is meant as a Paulista today, was established in 1689, when by Manoel de Moraes Navarro, called " de O Paulista " (such as: the inhabitants of the city of São Paulo), large areas have been acquired in this region. Since then, the area for sugarcane cultivation is developed.

Until Paulista 1935 independent city was, Paulista belonged to the city of Olinda.

Economy
