Paulus Melissus

Melissus Paul (aka Paul Schede, Paul also SCHEDIUS Melissus; * December 20, 1539 in Mellrichstadt, † February 3, 1602 in Heidelberg ) was a Neo-Latin poet, translator and composer.

Life

Melissus studied after attending school in Zwickau 1557-1559 Philology in Erfurt and Jena. 1560 to 1564 he lived in Vienna, where he was crowned as the 1561 poet. He stayed in Prague, Wittenberg and Leipzig, was appointed to the court of the Bishop of Würzburg and took part in an expedition to Hungary.

He was ambassador to the service of the Emperor Maximilian II and Rudolf II made ​​trips to France, Switzerland, Italy and England and eventually became director of the Electoral Library (Bibliotheca Palatina ) in Heidelberg.

Melissus translated the accommodated by Clément Marot and Théodore de Beze for the Huguenot worship in rhymes Psalms of David into German. He was among the first who kidnapped the sonnet and terza rima in the German poetry. Among his contemporaries he was regarded as the author of artful Latin love poems.
