Paulus Potter

Paul Pieterszoon Potter ( baptized November 20, 1625 in Enkhuizen, buried January 17, 1654 in Amsterdam) was a Dutch painter of the Baroque.

Life

Paulus Potter was in his father Pieter Symonsz Amsterdam studio. Potter and Jacob de Wel into teaching, possibly with Pieter Lastman and Claes Moeyaert. In 1646 he became a member of the Delft Guild of St. Luke. In 1649 he lived in The Hague, where he was also a member of the guild. 1652 he returned - but again back to Amsterdam, where the physician Dr. Nicolaes Tulp his mentor was - now married to Adriana baking Eynde.

The first known works date from the year 1641. His work until his untimely death tuberculosis comprises a total of approximately 130 paintings, mainly Dutch pastures with cattle highly detailed representations, genre paintings and hunting scenes. His animal pieces are world famous. His most famous work is the large painting The young bull from 1647, which can now be seen in the Mauritshuis in The Hague. His hometown Enkhuizen honored him with a monument that represents the young Potter drawing.
