Paunat

Paunat ( Occitan: Paunac ) is a southwestern French village with 312 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Dordogne in the Aquitaine region.

Location

Paunat lies at an altitude of about 115 meters above sea level. inst the same creek in the Périgord noir and only about seven kilometers ( driving distance ) from the south-west to place Trémolat away. The town of Bergerac is located about 40 kilometers to the west.

Demographics

In the 19th century the place had at times over 1,000 inhabitants, but due to the phylloxera crisis in the wine and the mechanization of agriculture, the population figures went up since the lows back in the 1970s and 1980s.

Economy

The inhabitants of the village live mainly from agriculture, from small businesses and tourism, because in recent years, many abandoned houses have been converted into holiday cottages ( gîtes ).

History

Its history is closely linked to the already mentioned in the 8th century abbey, which was looted during the years 849 and 860 by the Normans. Another predecessor of today's abbey church was - according to tradition - consecrated by the Bishop of Périgueux Frotarius in 991. In 1304 paid Bertrand de Got, archbishop of Bordeaux and later Pope Clement V, the Abbey a visit.

The church is recognized as a monument historique since 1956.

  • Immediately south of the church is the former rectory ( presbytery ) from the 18th century in which today houses a fine dining restaurant.
  • On the outskirts is still a sunk located laundry ( lavoir ) has received from the 19th century.
