Pavao Å toos

Pavao Štoos ( born December 10, 1806 at Dubravica Zaprešić, † March 30, 1862 in Pokupsko ) was a Croatian poet, priest and one of the most important people of the Illyrian movement in Croatia.

Life

Štoos left home in 1821 and moved to Zagreb, where he attended high school for seven years. He was one of the best students and later studied theology. After successful studies he was ordained priest ( 1833). From 1842 he worked as a priest in Pokupsko, but soon after he was elected in 1862 to the canons in Zagreb, Štoos died in Pokupsko. There he was buried, but his remains were transferred in 1936 to the Zagreb cemetery Mirogoj.

Works

Among his most famous poems include Kip domovine vu početku leta 1831 (English: Image of the home at the beginning of the year 1831) and Poziv u kolo Ilirsko ( Eng.: The call in the Illyrian dance ). He was an employee at Ljudevit Gaj influential magazine Danica and also as publisher and musician active.
