Pavel Chistyakov

Pavel Petrovich Chistyakov (Russian Павел Петрович Чистяков, scientific transliteration Pavel Petrovich Čistjakov; * 23 Junijul / July 5 1832greg in Prudy, Tver province, .. † November 11, 1919 in Detskoye Selo, today St. Petersburg ) was a Russian painter and educator. He made himself especially in the field of history painting, portraiture, and as a painter of genre pictures a name.

He received his first training in a traveling school. His father, who was himself a very humble origin, but put emphasis on a good education of his son. In 1849 Chistyakov joined the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, where he studied with Professor PW Basin. During the time at the Academy, he was several times with medals awarded, inter alia, for the image The Patriarch Hermogenes at dusk ( Патриарх Гермоген в темнице ) as well as for the image, the Grand Duchess Sofia Witorowna at the wedding of Grand Duke Vasily Temnij ( Великая княгиня Софья Витовтовна на свадьбе великого князя Василия Темного ). In the period from 1860 to 1864 he taught at the drawing school of the St. Petersburg Society for the Advancement of Applied Arts.

In 1863 he left Russia, visited Germany and worked in Paris and Rome. In 1879 he returned to St. Petersburg, where he was awarded the degree of an academic. This was done in recognition of his incurred abroad works Beggars in Rome ( Римский нищий ) The head of Tschutschara ( Голова чучарки ) and The Frenchman, who is preparing for a public Ball ( Француз, собирающийся на публичный бал ).

From 1872 he taught at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. In 1892 he was appointed member of the Academic Council and was a professor of art school. From 1908 to 1910 he led the master class as well as in the years 1890-1912, the department mosaic.

His most important students were Viktor Mikhailovich Vasnetsov, Mikhail Alexandrovich Vrubel, Vasily Dmitrievich Polenov, Ilya Repin, Valentin Alexandrovich Serov and Vasily Ivanovich Surikov.

Chistyakov died on 11 November 1919 in the present town of Pushkin.

Chistyakov played a significant role in the development of realism in Russian art of the second half of the 19th century. His works can be seen today mainly in the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum.
