Pavel Kubina

Pavel Kubina ( born April 15, 1977 in Čeladná, Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech professional ice hockey player who was most recently at the Genève -Servette HC in the National League A under contract.

Career

Kubina played during his junior time for HC Vitkovice, where he also began his professional career. NHL Entry Draft 1996, he was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the seventh round as 179.

In 1996 he went to North America and played initially as a junior at the Moose Jaw Warriors of the Western Hockey League. As the best defender there he stood from the 1997/98 season in Tampa's extended squad. Ten games he played in the NHL. Mostly he was still used in the American Hockey League with the Adirondack Red Wings. From the 1998/99 season, he still began in the International Hockey League with the Cleveland Lumberjacks with a few games, he made ​​his breakthrough in the NHL. After the season Kubina won his first world championship title with the Czech national team.

In the NHL he scored since become a sizes. Both as a robust player on the defensive as well as offensive defender he was respected in the league. In the 2003 /04 season he had 17 goals with large share of the first Stanley Cup victory for the Lightning. His good performance was rewarded with participation in the NHL All-Star Game in 2004. When the NHL went on strike, he played again in Vitkovice for his club. For the third time he won the world title for his country.

At the Olympic Winter Games in Turin in 2006 from the Czech Republic won the bronze medal with the national team of his native country. After his contract expired in the summer of 2006, he signed a contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. After a foul in the preparation, he missed blocked the start of the first season in Toronto. Also in Toronto, he established himself as a valuable player on the blue line the Leafs.

On 1 July 2009 Kubina joined together with Tim Stapleton from Toronto to Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for Garnet Exelby and Colin Stuart. Also in Atlanta Kubina played a major role in the defense of the team and finished the season as the second best defender on the team. Early July 2010 it was announced that the Tampa Bay Lightning Kubina had taken again under contract. On 18 February 2012, the Bolts him transferred in exchange for Jonathon Kalinski, a performance-based second-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft in 2013 and a fourth- round choice right in the NHL Entry Draft in 2013 to the Philadelphia Flyers.

In February 2013 Kubina was signed by the Genève -Servette HC of the National League A until season's end.

Internationally

Kubina represented his home country the Czech Republic at the U20 World Youth Championship in 1996, the Ice Hockey World Championships in 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2005, and the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Torino 2006 and Vancouver 2010.

In the years 1999, 2001 and 2005 Kubina each celebrated winning the World Championship title. In 2006 he won the bronze medal with the Czechs at the Olympic Winter Games.
