He is considered the greatest opera composer of the early Ionian school and as the first who brought the modern Greek history on the opera stage.

Under Carrers teachers were Cricca Giuseppe and Francesco Mirangini, the conductor of the Philharmonic Society of Zakynthos, according to report by Spyros Motsenigos also Nikolaos Mantzaros in Corfu. 1850-57 studied in Milan at Carrer Raimondo Bosserone, Pietro Tassistro and winter. Here in 1852 at the Teatro Carcano also premiered his first opera, Dante e Beatrice ( 1852). Isabella d' Aspeno followed in 1854 at the Teatro San Giacomo in Corfu, La rediviva (1856 ) again in Milan.

1857 Carrer returned back to Zakynthos and also led his stage works composed until then on. He married the soprano Isavella Iatra who had sung the title roles in his operas. In addition, he worked on his first opera material from the history of the Greek War of Independence - excerpts from his opera Markos Botsaris were 1858 King Otto presented in Athens, a performance was however not initially, because the young Greek state patriotic themes in deference to the European powers did not appear opportune and a performance at the British protectorate under the United States of the Ionian Islands was undesirable as a possible demonstration for union with Greece. Only in 1861 it came in Patras premiered the show in 1875 in Athens, finally, was a triumphant success and established Carrers greece wide success as a composer. Other works with similar subjects followed: Frossini (1879 Patras ) and Despo o L' eroina di Suli ( " Despo or The Heroine of Souli ", 1883 Patras ), which have been extremely successful in Greece, both of which are available on CD (label Lyra ). At the same time began Carrer to teach in Zakynthos, and was there at times, conductor of the Philharmonic Society. Add to Zakynthos Carrer he built a villa designed by the architect Ernst Ziller.

As a composer Carrer forms the bridge between the composers of the early Ionian school as Iosif Liveralis for the second major, internationally become known Greek opera composer Spyros Samaras. His style, which is comparable to that of early Verdi, developed increasingly more personal traits with the turning on Greek subjects. After 1910, the extraordinary success of Carrers compositions gradually waned; of a total of 13 operas Carrers is lost almost half. 2003 Marathon Salamis incomplete opera was first performed at the Teatro Olympia in Athens of completed version.

During his time in Milan Carrer also wrote several chamber works, including opera paraphrases for flute and piano. Apart from his operas, he left behind an extensive oeuvre Song, also piano music and liturgical choral music.
