PC Engine SuperGrafx

The SuperGrafx is a 16 -bit game console produced by NEC of Japan.

History

The SuperGrafx was brought by NEC in 1989 as a successor console for the PC Engine on the Japanese market. The pure 16- bit console should be a response to the newly created competition in the form of the Sega Mega Drive and was later positioned against the Super NES.

The new system offered backward compatibility for PC Engine, more colors and more sprites. However, since the differences from the predecessor and the number of games were too low overall, saw lots of video players from the face of a high price from the purchase of SuperGrafx. This led to the NEC in 1991 ceased production and turned back to his PC Engine.

Games

The games for the SuperGrafx were brought out as for the PC Engine on HuCards, which is an important foundation for the backward compatibility of SuperGrafx. Games for PC Engine goods by flipping a switch on the back of the system therefore also playable. The 1988 released CD -ROM ² can be connected via an adapter ( RAU -30 ) to the interface unit of the CD -ROM ² due to the different shape of the SuperGrafx. The available from 1991 Super CD -ROM ² can, however, just plug in without an adapter, also eliminated by the built-in Super System Card the need for a system -Card in module slot in the operation of the new drive.

However, the number of games that have been developed specifically for the SuperGrafx amounts to just seven.
