PDCA

Deming or Deming wheel, Shewhart Cycle, PDCA cycle describes a four-phase iterative problem-solving process, which has its origins in quality assurance. PDCA stands for the German Plan - Do - Check - Act, which also, in the German Plan - is translated Do - Check - Apply ' action or Plan - Do - - Check '. The PDCA cycle also has application in the continuous improvement process or during kaizen.

Concept and history

The term Deming Circle is named after William Edwards Deming (1900-1993), an American physicist and statistician whose work has significantly influenced the current status of quality management. Deming himself, referring to the Shewhart cycle after Walter A. Shewhart. According to the four steps he is also called PDCA cycle; or in German translation PTCA cycle: Plan - Do ( performing ) - Check ( Check ) - action ( act, action ).

Four Steps

The PDCA cycle as a system for continuous improvement (Kaizen ) is based on the principle of Gemba, "Go to the place of action " and is especially the staff on site with their exact knowledge of the situation in the workplace at the center of planning.

The PDCA cycle consists of four elements:

The improvement of this standard begins again with the phase diagram.

Application

The PDCA cycle describes the phases in the continuous improvement process (CIP ). CIP is the foundation of all quality management systems. Thus, the continuous improvement of processes and procedures followed with the aim to improve the efficiency, customer and employee satisfaction is the company in business.

In industry and in the service sector it belongs to the standard procedures. CIP and PDCA cycle are fundamental components of the standards ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 Information technology - Security techniques - Information security management system requirements specification and the BSI - Standard 100-1: Information Security Management Systems (ISMS ).

After each PDCA cycle, the measures are to standardize by a SDCA cycle. After each introduction of a defined standards ( Standardize ), this standard is practiced (Thu ), the method for accuracy and operability checks ( checks) and amended when necessary (action ). This action is then usually scheduling a further PDCA cycle.
