Pearl McGonigal

Pearl Kathryne McGonigal, CM, OM ( born June 10, 1929 in Melville, Saskatchewan ) is a Canadian politician. From 1981 to 1986 she was Deputy Governor of the province of Manitoba.

Biography

Before her entry into politics McGonigal worked for nine years as a bank teller and seven years as an advertising executive. In 1969 she was elected as the first woman in the city council of St. James - Assiniboia, two years prior to the incorporation to Winnipeg. After that she was another ten years on the City Council of Winnipeg from 1979 to 1981 as Vice - Mayor.

During this time, McGonigal has written numerous columns in local newspapers. Among them was a weekly column about cooking called Frankly Feminine, which earned her a reputation as a gourmet cook and she made ​​known throughout Manitoba. In addition, she was a board member or director of numerous charitable and cultural organizations, besides, she was represented in the boards of several companies.

Governor General Edward Schreyer sworn McGonigal on 23 October 1981 as Vice- Governor of Manitoba. She was the first woman to hold this prestigious office and practiced it out until 11 December 1986. Then she took her former charitable activities again. In 1994 she was awarded for her contribution to the Order of Canada, six years later the Order of Manitoba.
