PeaZip

PeaZip is an open source, cross-platform and portable pack program.

The source code is mainly written in Free Pascal using Lazarus; the program is under the LGPL for Windows and Linux installation package ( Windows Installer, DEB, RPM, Slackware. tgz ) and a portable package that does not need to be installed and not changed the system to be released.

PeaZip has its own archive format, PEA, the compression, split into multiple archives and flexible schemes for certified encryption and integrity checking support, and other widely used formats with special emphasis on open formats like 7z and PAQ.

Use

PeaZip allows to browse archives in navigational or quick mode, there are different inclusion and exclusion filters applies in the archives and can compress and extract multiple archives at once.

While the objects are specified to be compressed, PeaZip can restore, and edit the layout of the archive and fine-tune the compression and encryption for supported formats.

The default output path can be specified both for packing and for unpacking. This, however, can be overridden for a single session or a single operation.

For both packing and unpacking the job definition can be saved as a command line ( or script for learning purposes). The fact that you have a detailed log of the process, this helps the user to bridge the gap between GUI and console a bridge to unite the best of both.

PeaZip can also be used to a varying extent archives to share / merge, compress executable files with strip / UPX and to create random passwords and keyfiles.

The most frequently used functions of the program are also in transmitting or context menu ( Windows) or as a. Desktop files for context menus ( Linux version ) available. The user interface can be customized in terms of transparency, some colors and icons.

Details

PeaZip also serves as a graphical frontend for the following open source or freeware programs:

  • Pea program (graphically) by the same author;
  • Igor Pavlov 7-Zip and myspaces POSIX port of 7z on Linux;
  • PAQ8 programs: Matt Mahoney's PAQ8F and PAQ8L, Bill Pettis PAQ8JD;
  • Ilia Muravievs QUAD
  • GNU Strip and UPX
  • UNACEV2.DLL 2.6.0.0 ( toll free UNACEV2.DLL license) and UNACE for Linux ( toll free UNACE for Linux license), Marcel Lemke, ACE Compression Software.

Most of these tools can be operated, which offers a user-friendly editing of the output information both in console mode as well as a graphical user interface.

At the current stage of development of the project, there are also some criticisms of the program, including:

  • UTF8 is not fully supported by the GUI.
  • Drag and drop the program is not supported in contrast to other similar archiving programs. Drag and Drop into the program is possible since version 1.10.
  • The graphical user interface reacts a little delayed on user inputs and the progress bar of the console window is much more reliable than the progress bar for the graphical wrapper.
