Pebble (watch)

Pebble is a Smart Watch with e- paper display .. The clock was announced in April 2012 on the crowdfunding site and is sold since 23 January 2013. Pebble can be connected via Bluetooth 4.0 with a smartphone. You can by vibration alert message text or alarm, for example, an incoming call, inform emails (Gmail or IMAP), calendar entries, Facebook messages, Twitter and weather warnings.


The Software Development Kit can be used freely to create, for example, their own apps for the clock. Thus, not only a variety of skins is possible, but also applications such as the control of the music on a computer connected to the clock smartphone or using the clock as a tachometer when cycling or running.

Compatibility and technical data

Pebble is compatible with all Android devices running Android 2.3 and the iPhone 5, 4S / 4, 3GS and iPod touch with iOS 5.0. The clock is 5 inches deep and 3 inches wide. The low-power, transflective LCD display Sharp LS013B7DH01 with a resolution of 144 × 168 pixels promises to relatively long battery life (according to manufacturer 5-7 days), which make it unlike comparable watches that display the contents permanently.

Planning and delivery

As the developer of the clock had originally only needed $ 100,000 to implement their projects, of May 9, 2012, from the evening does not accept further donations with just over 85,000 watches sold, so you donate just one dollar each for the registration of the newsletter could. Due to the overwhelming success, the developers decided at short notice to offer the watches waterproof construction and fitted with Bluetooth 4.0 (originally a Bluetooth 2.1 support was only planned). In addition to the three colors promised at the beginning of the project in late July it was announced also an orange version, which was selected by vote by customers. In early September, a further variant of gray clock has been announced yet. The original target release date in September was abandoned without naming a new appointment. The delay was due, among other things, that the origin plan provided only a production quantity of 1,000 pieces. However, more than 85 times the amount of the original plan was pre-ordered through the Kickstarter campaign. The new plan called for a production speed of 15,000 copies per week.
