The Pechersk Raion (Ukrainian Печерський район / rayon Petscherskyj; Russian Печерский район / Pechersky raion ) is an administrative district of the city of Kiev in Ukraine, located on the west bank of the Dnieper mainly within the historic part of the city.

The Rajon has about 145,000 inhabitants (2013 ), an area of about 19.6 km ² and a population density of 7404 inhabitants per km ². The residential area of Pechersk ( Печерськ ) is adjacent to the right bank of Dnieper hills. The two geographic terms are often confused with each other.

History

Pechersk is one of the main cultural areas of Kiev and the home of Kiev-Pechersk monastery, from which the name derives Pechersk ( Petschera means in Ukrainian cave ). The settlement near the monastery was founded in the 12th century and renamed during the 16th or 17th century in Pechersk. From the 18th to the mid 20th century, it was the administrative center of the city of Kiev.

In January 1918, the area was the center of the January Uprising in the Arsenal factory, which played a determining role in spite of its crushing defeat of the Ukrainian armed forces and the surrender of the city of Kiev before the Soviet - Russian army under Colonel Mikhail Murawjow.

Since the 1930s Pechersk is also the political center of the city and the term " Petschersker hill " has become synonymous with the Ukrainian government and the political elite.

Rajon Pechersk

The Pechersk Raion, which is erroneously often referred to simply as Pechersk, next to the historic Pechersk includes several other historical places of Kiev, under which Lypky, Klow, Swirynez, Telytschka and Chorna Hora are particularly noteworthy.

The Rajon originated in 1917, was called from 1924 Rajon Lenin and between 1936-1941 Rajon Kirov, since re- Pechersk Raion.
