Pechora Sea

The Pechora (Russian Печорское море ) is a marginal sea of the Barents Sea between the islands Kolgujew in the West, Waigatsch in the east, the south island of Novaya Zemlya in the north and Russia on the coast Jugorskijhalbinsel in the south.

The Pechora is flat, its average depth is 6 m; the lowest point is at 210 m. In the coastal area is an ocean current towards the east, the Kolgujewstrom. The mainland coast are offshore islands, some of which is largest Dolgi.

The Pechora is frozen from November to June with drift ice and pack ice. The largest opening into it is the eponymous river Pechora.

In the coastal area and under the seabed there is considerable oil reserves. The exploration and production in the remote region is controversial because of the risk of the sensitive Arctic ecosystem by platform construction, operation, and transarktische shipping related. In the years 2012 and 2013, the environmental group greenpeace protest as part of its "Save the Arctic " campaign with their ship Arctic Sunrise at the production platform Priraslomnaja, which was built in the Pechora.
