Pedra Badejo

Pedra Badejo is a town of about 10,000 inhabitants on the east coast of Santiago Island in Cape Verde. It is located about 40 kilometers north-northwest of the provincial capital Praia and is the seat of the district administration of the district ( concelho ) Santa Cruz.

Until 1975 the town was named Santiago Mayor, this name is still widespread today.

Since 1983 is twinned with Leibnitz in Austria.

Transport links

The bus station at SUCUPIRA market in Praia, the 40 km distant capital of Cape Verde, Pedra Badejo is easy to reach with the Cape Verde Islands for the typical and frequent public Aluguer buses. The buses, however, not go to a fixed timetable, but run from as soon as enough passengers have arrived. The journey takes just over an hour. The road is in good condition and can be driven in any weather.

Pedra Badejo also has a small harbor.

Infrastructure

Pedra Badejo has a health center and several schools. In the city center are located next to numerous shops a few simple restaurants. Many stores offer local stalls homegrown vegetables.

On the beach, is a popular destination for residents of the capital, especially at weekends and not far away from the town center, a former health center was converted into a hotel.

Attractions

In Pedra Badejo, you can visit two churches: the modern Catholic church located in the newer, upper part of the city. In the main street stands at the entrance to the New Apostolic Church. On the main square a memorial to a local musician is worth seeing.

Pedra Badejo is surrounded by irrigated land. Not far from the town was named after seventeen months of construction, completed the first China -funded dam of Cape Verde in 2006, the Barragem de Poilão, located between the towns of Poilão and Lavada dos Orgãos. The reservoir has a capacity of 1.7 million cubic meters and is used for drip irrigation of 64 ha of arable land and garden of approximately 100 farms. In the south of the lake, where you can watch birds, there is an information pavilion.
