Bornes de Aguiar is a comune ( Freguesia ) at the Portuguese circuit ( concelho ) Vila Pouca de Aguiar. 2049 inhabitants live in it (as at 30 June 2011).

History

Dolmen prove the settlement to prehistoric times. The Romans settled here left traces, especially the water supply systems for their various ore mines in the region. The present town was first mentioned in 1220. Bornes belonged to the circle of Aguiar da Pena, until it was annexed to the beginning of the 19th century, newly established district of Vila Pouca de Aguiar. As a separate municipality, it has remained unchanged through the centuries until today.

Culture and sights

You can visit the excavations of the Roman water Verso Reasoning System, which served the ancient mines of Trêsminas, in particular a water tunnel and two reservoirs. Other monuments in the church are historic public buildings including the railway station, and religious buildings, in addition to various chapels and Romanesque parish church Igreja de Paroquial Bornes de Aguiar (also Igreja de São Martinho ) from the 14th century, among other things, inside Mannerist and Baroque altarpieces in gilded wood ( Talha dourada ) shows.

Pedras Salgadas is the most important town of the community, and nationally known for its thermal baths. The bottled sparkling water of the same name will be marketed nationally and internationally.

Management

Bornes de Aguiar is the seat of an eponymous municipality ( Freguesia ), but their management ( Junta de Freguesia ) is located in the most important place of the community in Pedras Salgadas. The neighboring municipalities are Tresminas, Padrela, Sabroso, Vreia de Bornes, Bragado, Pensalvos and Vila Pouca de Aguiar.
