Pedro Zaballa

Pedro Zaballa Barquín ( born July 29, 1938 in Castro Urdiales, † June 4, 1997 in Oviedo) was a Spanish football player.

Career

Association

The striker began his professional career in 1956 with the then third division Gimnástica de Torrelavega. Already in the following year he moved to league rivals Sociedad Deportiva Rayo Cantabria. Again, it only lasted one season until Zaballa opted for another change. The former first division side Racing Santander became aware of the attacker and signed him for the season 1958/59. In Santander managed Zaballa team regular. In three years he was one of the top performers of the team. In the summer of 1961 finally gave the Spanish giants FC Barcelona, the player's commitment known. Zaballa played from 1961 to 1967 for Barça. Particularly memorable he remains the Barça supporters when he scored the 2000th league goal of the club's history. One of the biggest successes this time winning the Copa del Rey in 1963 and the success belongs in the Fairs Cup 1965/66. In the all-Spanish final in Barcelona at that time decided by a 0-1 in the first leg only by a 4-2 after extra time in the second leg the final as well. For the 1967/68 season, since start of the season for active CE Sabadell, Zaballa moved in the game against Real Madrid for a special event in the heart of the action. An attack for his team broke the striker suddenly and kicked the ball into touch when he saw that hurt his opponent Andres Junquera was on the floor. Later a " Fair Play " prize he was awarded for this gesture of UNESCO in Paris. In 1968/69 he was División with Sabadell fourth in the Primera. This also meant the best finish in club history and the qualification for the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. In the first game against Club Brugge Zaballa scored in a 2-0 win the first international matches of his team. In the return match then they lost with 1:5 and had to retire. For the 1970/71 season the offensive player moved one last time to end his career at Real Oviedo.

National

In his only full international for Spain on April 8, 1964 against Ireland, he scored both goals in the 2-0 final score.
