Peer Name Resolution Protocol

The Peer Name Resolution Protocol ( PNRP ) is a network protocol for name resolution by the peer-to - peer model.

It is intended to enable the publication of names and their resolution in addresses without a server as they are needed in the Domain Name System.

The protocol was developed by Microsoft and first implemented in Windows Vista, where it replaces NetBEUI. In Microsoft Windows XP was introduced with Service Pack 3, but must be explicitly enabled there. It is available and disabled by default in Vista only or IPv6 using Teredo. Name resolution is possible, however, because the service is dynamically started.

It has similarities with the peer -to-peer network uses a modification of the pastry and the prefix routing.

Microsoft Windows 7 PNRP is used in conjunction with the Remote Desktop Protocol for Remote Assistance, and allows there a straightforward stooping over a Network Address Translation.

Microsoft provides the specification of the protocol as Open Specification available.
