Peggy Seeger

Peggy Seeger ( born June 17, 1935 in New York City ) is an American ( and between early British ) folk singer and songwriter.

Life and work

Seeger grew up in a musical family; her father was the musicologist Charles Seeger (1886-1979), her mother, Ruth Crawford Seeger, the composer (1901-1953); Pete Seeger (1919-2014) her half-brother, Alan Seeger (1888-1916), her uncle. One of the first recordings by Peggy Seeger, together with brother Mike was American Folk Songs for Children ( 1955). During the McCarthy era, she attended the mid-1950s, the People's Republic of China, after her passport was confiscated. They therefore went on a European tour. In a speech in London in 1956, the folk singer Ewan McColl fell in love with it. To further obtain a work permit in the UK, she married in 1959 the Scottish folk singer Alex Campbell in Paris to obtain British citizenship and be able to continue the relationship with MacColl. In later years, MacColl and Seeger married. They lived together until MacColls death in 1989 and had three children ( Neill, Calum and Kitty ).

Seeger was part of the Critics' Group, in the socially critical singer-songwriters Britain had together. Her songs are often unionized oriented, but also deal with issues of peace and the women's movement. In 1994, she returned to the United States, where she lives in Asheville today.
