Pehr Kalm

Pehr Kalm (* March 1716 in Ångermanland, † November 16, 1779 in Turku ) was a Swedish naturalist and an agricultural economist. He is regarded as one of the apostles of Linnaeus. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Kalm ".

Life

Kalm began in 1735 to study natural sciences at the Academy at Turku and undertook in 1740 at the expense of university presidents Sten Carl Bielke first scientific journey that took him to different parts of Finland. The following year Kalm traveled to Uppland and Västmanland. There he meets Carl Linnaeus know and then enrolled at the University of Uppsala.

Linnaeus gave Kalm before its journey through Västergötland and Bohuslän in 1742 instructions Kalm in 1746 published his first work on rare plants, their economic benefits, he assessed. In 1744, he went along with his patron Bielke on a research trip through Russia and Ukraine. Although only a student could produce such research successes Kalm already that he was admitted to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences 1745.

In 1746, Kalm has been proposed as a lecturer in natural history and economics at the Academy at Turku and was in the following year, the first holder of the newly established Chair. However, it took another five years before he started work. Previously, he was selected by Linnaeus to travel to America. In areas with the same climatic conditions as in Sweden Kalm should look for plants and evaluate their economic benefits. Kalm went on this trip in 1747 and traveled through England, where he remained for six months, to America. He remained there from September 1748 to February 1751. The first three parts of his reports he published in his work En resa till Norra America. The manuscript for the four remaining parts went to Kalms death over to the university library in Turku, where it was destroyed by fire in 1827.

In November 1752 Kalm began his work as a professor, where under his presidency in 1476 disputations were issued.

Ehrentaxon

The plant genus Kalmia from the family Ericaceae ( Ericaceae ) has been named after him.
